About Papua Paradise

Papua Paradise Eco Resort is part of the Lotus Group of hotels and like the other properties run by Lotus, Papua Paradise is a resort built for comfort, exceptional service and great diving. It is located on the small island of Birie, on Batanta’s north coast facing the Dampier Strait, and perfectly placed to explore the sites that helped to make Raja Ampat so famous, as well as some less well known ones around Batanta itself.

Papua Paradise is built between the beautiful blue sea and the dense green jungle that cloaks the island of Birie. Obviously the resort is focused on the incredible diving, but guests can also explore the natural environment on land and the area is actually famous for its bird life as much as its marine diversity. Fabulous endemic species - including birds of paradise - can be seen from trails behind the resort or on one of their special bird tours.

The resort’s 16 Superior Bungalows all have beautiful furnishings and decoration, an ensuite bathroom and veranda with sun beds and hammock. None have aircon, instead they are cooled by natural breezes and a fan. The Superior Bungalows are available with twin or double beds.

The 10 larger Deluxe Bungalows are airy and audacious, with an extra ceiling fan, two-tier veranda and king sized bed, along with the beautiful artwork and design found throughout the resort. None have aircon, instead they are cooled by natural breezes and fans. The Deluxe Bungalows are available with twin or double beds and have enough space for a third bed to be added.

Resort facilities

The resort's 26 bungalows are built over the sea, overlooking the amazing house reef and offering amazing views out over the calm sea. The rooms take inspiration from local architectural styles and were designed to take advantage of natural cooling - no need for aircon when you can have sea breezes and a fan. Every bungalow has a double or twin single beds, an ensuite bathroom and a veranda with day beds to relax on and watch the sunset.

The resort restaurant serves three meals a day and snacks in between, and is a great place to sit and relax with a coffee whilst watching the juvenile sharks in the shallows below. On the menu is a mix of Indonesian and Western food, created from food grown in the resort garden, bought from the local villages and fishermen or made fresh every day in the kitchen. If not diving or relaxing in the restaurant, guests can go kayaking, snorkelling, bird watching or join an early morning mangrove cruise or village tour in the afternoon. Papua Paradise can also arrange trips to see birds of paradise on Batanta, very close to the resort.

Conservation at Papua Paradise Eco Resort

Papua Paradise Eco Resort was built with the environment in mind and employs sustainable business practices whenever possible. The resort relies entirely on natural cooling and fans, rather than using aircon, and recycles plastic, food and chemical waste. Papua Paradise has developed close ties with local villages and buys much of its food locally. It also runs a foundation to support the villagers and provide medical supplies and basic medical education to combat common diseases, and supports the work of a conservation group studying the whale species of Raja Ampat.

Papua Paradise does not use plastic straws and offers aluminium water bottles to its guests for use. It also recycles plastic, paper and food waste whenever possible. None of the resort buildings use aircon - all are cooled naturally and with fans. Papua Paradise has installed energy-efficient lighting and appliances and fitted proper insulation to its cold store rooms to reduce energy use. It has also invested in 4 stroke engines for the majority of its dive boats to reduce fuel use.

Papua Paradise Eco Resort has developed very close ties with villages in the area and apart from the resort and dive centre managers, 100% of the staff are local. All the staff receive training on sustainability and the environment and the resort has set up a foundation to assist the local villages - in particular, by providing medical supplies and basic training to recognise malaria and other diseases which are common in the villages.

The resort buys fresh fish, vegetables and fruit from the local villages whenever possible and offers locally-produced handicrafts as souvenirs to its guests.

Papua Paradise uses responsible dive and snorkel guidelines, participates in a mooring programmes and conducts beach and underwater cleanups. It also supports the work of an NGO conducting research on the different species of whales found in Raja Ampat.
