Diving at Scuba Republic Basecamp

Scuba Republic’s onsite SSI dive centre offers daily boat diving, a house reef, rental equipment and a range of SSI courses from beginner through to advanced, rescue, specialties and divemaster programmes. Diving is operated from three boats, with departures typically around 08:30 for two or three boat dives depending on the schedule that day. Full dive equipment and dive computers are available for rent, although guests should confirm sizes in advance. Tanks are 12-litre aluminium with DIN and INT valves, but guests are advised to bring an adapter if required as the number of DIN tanks are limited. Group sizes are normally four divers per guide, and nitrox is not available. 

The basecamp’s local dive area includes the house reef, Mioskon, Lao-lao, Blue Magic, Chicken Reef, Sardine Reef, Kri Island, Friwen, Sapokren, Mansuar Island and Saonek. Full-day trips can also visit Arborek, Manta Sandy, Manta Ridge, Piaynemo, Melissa’s Garden and Batu Rufas - these longer trips require a minimum number of guests and are charged extra. Raja Ampat is known for currents, so dive sites are chosen according to certification level, experience, weather, tides and current checks. Snorkelling trips are available, and the house reef in front of the basecamp is also ideal for snorkelling directly from shore.

Diving in Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat sits within Indonesia’s Bird’s Head Seascape and is known for exceptional reef biodiversity, schooling fish, manta rays, reef sharks, wobbegong sharks, pygmy seahorses, soft corals and healthy hard coral gardens. Northern Raja Ampat and the Dampier Strait are home to some of the region’s best-known diving, with reefs, pinnacles, channels, cleaning stations and fish-packed current dives around areas such as Mansuar, Kri, Waigeo, Gam and Arborek. 

North Raja Ampat can be dived year-round, while the south is only accessible from September to July. For budget-savvy divers, Scuba Republic Basecamp provides the perfect northern Raja Ampat experience, offering a simple land-based stay close to Waisai and within reach of many Dampier Strait sites.

Getting there

Guests will arrive in Raja Ampat via Sorong, using Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ). From Sorong, visitors catch the daily public ferry to Waisai, then transfer by road to the basecamp. The drive from Waisai to the resort takes around 20 minutes and Scuba Republic includes pick-up and drop-off from Waisai at the beginning and end of the stay. 

The return ferry from Waisai to Sorong currently operates twice daily, leaving Waisai at 09:00 and 14:00, with tickets purchased at the harbour. Guests should plan flight times around ferry schedules and allow some extra time for delays, weather and the remote island setting.

Other activities

Non-diving guests can enjoy a wide range of activities include snorkelling the house reef, relaxing on the beach lounge deck, visiting Waisai, birdwatching in the Sapokren or Putras areas, and excursions to  Kali Biru or Piaynemo. Scooter rental can also be organised for independent exploration where suitable.
