KLM Sunshine is a cosy phinisi crafted in hardwood by the world-renowned master boat-builders in Sulawesi. This vessel offers some of Indonesia’s most adventurous liveaboard safaris in the best diving areas around Sulawesi and beyond, visiting remote regions such as Halmahera, the Togian and Sangihe Islands, and Bangka - plus expeditions into frontier diving destinations that only a handful of intrepid guests have seen before. KLM Sunshine accommodates a maximum of eight divers and provides plenty of personalised service from the highly experienced team. Expect genuinely special experiences both above and below the water.

KLM Sunshine is operated by Blue Bay Divers, based on the small island of Sahaung in the Bangka archipelago. This local dive centre has been exploring the area since 2004 and is well-known for delivering a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of individual care. The guides and boat captains at Blue Bay Divers are experts on the region’s dive sites and wildlife, allowing guests to explore in total comfort - and tick all the boxes on their liveaboard bucket list. Best of all, with just eight guests onboard, you’re guaranteed a relaxed family-style setting, with an welcoming atmosphere and sociable communal spaces.
Blue Bay Divers’ reputation for hospitality and cosy small-group experiences extends to their liveaboard vessel KLM Sunshine. Built by Sulawesi’s master craftsmen, this traditional phinisi was explicitly constructed for voyaging around some of Indonesia’s remotest regions - with a diver’s needs in mind. Whether you’re hoping to dive far-flung destinations like Halmahera, the Togian or Sangihe Islands, Sulawesi or Bangka, you can expect the trip of a lifetime with a blend of adventure and laid-back boat life. Exploratory expedition-style trips in places that even the most dedicated of divers have never heard of are also available, hitting previously unknown destinations like Dongala, Toli Toli, and Kwandang.
Onboard Sunshine
Sunshine is a beautiful Indonesian phinisi hand crafted in 2010 by traditional Sulawesi boat builders. This is a spacious vessel, accommodating a maximum of eight divers in four lovely solid teak cabins, each equipped with all that you’ll need for up to two weeks at sea. Three delicious meals are served in the air-conditioned salon each day, blending Asian and Western options with dishes to suit every taste. Snacks, soft drinks, coffee and tea, are available around the clock, and beer and wine are provided at an additional cost. A library of fish identification books and a modern entertainment centre can also be found in this relaxing space. In between dives, you can head topside to chill in the outdoor dining and lounge area or catch some rays from the solarium.
Diving from Sunshine
Divers will relish the large dive deck onboard KLM Sunshine which features plenty of storage space and provides easy access to a lowered platform and spacious custom tender. Full equipment rental is available, including dive computers, and guests are required to dive with nitrox 32% onboard Sunshine - meaning a nitrox qualification is required. Not qualified? Don’t worry; with advanced notice, you can complete the course at Blue Bay Divers Resort prior to departure. Charging stations for cameras and laptops are readily available as well as rinse tanks for your equipment and sensitive electronics.
Top tips
- Struggling to find the perfect flights? Guests can check-in up to two days before departure and stay onboard up to two days after.
- For the ultimate experience, add a land excursion to your trip - volcano and highlands trekking are the most popular options.
- You’ll need nitrox certification and 50 logged dives to join this vessel’s most adventurous itineraries.
