CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES

Conservation at Lembeh Resort

Lembeh Resort’s Social Commitment - The founder of Lembeh Resort, Alex Rorimpandey always believed in supporting local communities in North Sulawesi. From the beginning, Lembeh Resort and Critters@Lembeh have provided ongoing training and employment for people from the local villages. The company encourage villagers to cherish the natural environment both above and below the sea, as well as their traditional cultures and the resort does its best to promote viable livelihood opportunities now and sustainable ones for future generations.

Lembeh Resort and Critters@Lembeh employ and train many local villagers on Lembeh Island. The resort staff are given the opportunity to experience diving in the hope that it will cultivate a greater appreciation for the unique underwater ecosystems of the strait. Diving Lembeh Strait affords the staff a deeper appreciation of why people travel from around the world to experience critter diving in Indonesia and why Lembeh Strait is considered the best muck diving and macro diving destination in the world. In keeping with his commitment to the community, Alex donated materials to build the local church in nearby Pintu Kota Kecil. This mutual cooperation has helped forge a strong bond between the resort and the village and today, Lembeh Resort provides electrical power for the church and Sunday school, which plays an important role in most of the education on the island. The resort also helps guests to donate materials for the school and the children. The two nearest villages Pintu Kota Kecil and Pintu Kota Besar are home to families of small-scale fishermen and the resort is planning to contribute towards a learning centre with a small library and a computer with a USB modem for internet access.

As well as their commitment to the villages in the area, the resort strives to reduce its environmental impact whenever possible.

Sustinability

ENVIRONMENT

Lembeh resort recycles all plastics whenever possible and but also aims to remove any single-use plastics from the resort. Water use is kept to a minimum by the use of such things as tap aerators and rain water is collected and used as much as possible. Rooms and buildings are fitted with LED lighting, solar water heaters and energy efficient appliances and the resort estimates 20% of its energy use is supplied by renewable energy sources.

SOCIAL

95% of Lembeh Resort’s staff come from the local villages and the resort has an extensive social commitment programme involving schools support programmes, environmental education, reef restoration projects and rubbish collection programmes.
