Diving at Anthony's Key Resort

Anthony’s Key is home to a PADI 5-Star Career Development Centre that offers equipment rental, daily dives, dive training and dockside storage. Three boat dives are generally scheduled each day, departing at approximately 08:30, 10:30 and 14:30, with additional night dives normally offered twice a week. Freshwater showers and rinse tanks are located near the boats, while tanks, weights and weight belts are all included in dive packages. The fleet of dive boats is made up of seven custom 13m vessels and four 15m vessels. Nitrox fills, private guides, PADI courses and photography services can also be organised. Snorkellers can book dedicated packages and guided boat trips.

More than 35 dive sites lie within around 30 minutes of the resort, allowing divers to explore coral gardens, steep walls, sandy channels and wrecks without long boat journeys. Front Porch Reef is located immediately outside the resort, while notable sites farther afield include Half Moon Bay Wall, Hole in the Wall and the El Aguila wreck. The 91-metre Odyssey offers another substantial wreck dive, while Roatán’s northwest reefs support turtles, eagle rays, moray eels, schooling fish, barracuda and a wide variety of Caribbean reef species. Site choice depends on conditions, diver experience and the daily schedule.

Diving in Roatan and Guanaja

Roatán and the neighbouring Bay Islands sit alongside the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and offer more than 100 dive sites across shallow coral gardens, walls, pinnacles, wrecks and channels. Conditions suit a range of experience levels, with many sheltered reefs for beginner divers and deeper walls, swim-throughs and wrecks for those with more experience.

The island’s best-known sites in the northwest include Divemaster’s Choice, Dixie’s Place, Lighthouse Reef, Hole in the Wall and Half Moon Bay Wall. Farther around the island, divers can visit the Prince Albert, El Aguila, Mr Bud and Odyssey wrecks, while Roatán’s south coast is known for Caribbean reef shark encounters. Turtles, eagle rays, schooling jacks, barracuda and healthy sponge-covered reefs can be encountered throughout the year.

Anthony’s Key is particularly well positioned for diving along Roatán’s northwest coast, while still offering access to selected wrecks and sites farther afield.

Getting there

The nearest airport is Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport, Roatán (RTB). Direct international services operate from several North American gateways, including Miami, Atlanta, Dallas and Houston, while domestic connections are available from mainland Honduras.

Anthony’s Key Resort is approximately 15 minutes by road from the airport. Round-trip airport transfers are included in the resort packages and can be arranged in advance once guests have confirmed their flight itinerary. Guests staying in waterfront accommodation continue from the main resort to Anthony’s Key using the resort’s water taxi.

Guests arriving in mainland Honduras should allow sufficient time for any connections and confirm in advance whether a domestic flight or the ferry connection is the best way to get to Roatan. Check-in at the resort is from 15:00 and check-out is by 11:00.

Other activities

Non-diving activities include guided snorkelling, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and time beside the freshwater pool or small resort beach. Ixora Spa provides massages, facials, body treatments and nail care, while scheduled yoga classes are held beside the pool.

The Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences offers educational dolphin encounters in a natural seawater setting. Additional excursions can include visits to Maya Key, island tours, horseback riding, zip-line canopy tours, chocolate and rum tastings and trips to Gumbalimba Park. Seven-night resort packages may include a Maya Key beach excursion and the weekly Island Fiesta, depending on the package booked.

Environment

The Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences (RIMS) was established in 1989 by the owners of Anthony's Key Resort. The primary objective of this facility is the preservation of Roatan's natural resources through education and research. RIMS has established itself as a dedicated teaching institution, and is visited year-round by colleges, universities, and high schools from abroad to study tropical marine ecosystems and the resident bottlenose dolphins.

To minimise water consumption, the resort changes bed linens and towels every third day and again upon check-out. Wastewater is also collected, treated in the onsite Bio-Microbics plant, and used to irrigate the gardens on the property. Single-use plastic items are not purchased by or sold at the resort. That means you won’t find plastic bags, bottles, coffee stirrers, straws, or other common single-use plastic items here. To further reduce single-use plastic, Anthony’s Key Resort equips all guest room baths with bulk dispensers for liquid bath amenities, which housekeeping refills from larger containers. Additional sustainable efforts include the installation of solar panels – the largest privately-owned solar installation in the Western Caribbean.
