Vessel information

Location

Truk Odyssey operates in Chuuk Lagoon, part of Chuuk State in the Federated States of Micronesia. The liveaboard departs from Weno, the main island and transport hub of Chuuk, where Chuuk International Airport is located. From here, the vessel explores the protected lagoon and its concentration of WWII wrecks, many of which lie within relatively short cruising distances of each other.

Chuuk Lagoon sits within a large barrier reef in the central Pacific, roughly between the Philippines and Hawaii. Its calm, sheltered waters made it a major Japanese naval base during World War II, and the remains of Operation Hailstone now form one of the world’s most famous wreck-diving destinations.

Liveaboard facilities

Truk Odyssey is a purpose-run, diver-focused liveaboard with a strong emphasis on comfort, space and managing wreck-diving safely. The vessel measures 40m and carries a maximum of 16 guests, giving divers plenty of room both above and below the surface.

Indoor areas are air-conditioned and include a generous dining salon, large entertainment lounge, onboard movie system, library, fish identification books and boutique. Outdoor areas include a sundeck with lounge chairs, deck chairs and a covered shaded section.

The vessel is built around diving, with a large dive deck, private dive stations, dive lockers, camera tables, camera rinse tanks, gear rinse tanks, battery charging and an easy-entry dive platform. A fixed deco and safety bar, technical diving equipment and a lift make Odyssey particularly well suited to serious wreck divers.

Cabins

Truk Odyssey accommodates up to 16 guests in nine staterooms. Seven cabins can be set up with either twin beds for two single travellers or a king-size bed for couples, while two cabins are designed for single occupancy with a twin bed.

All cabins are air-conditioned with individual controls and include a private bathroom with toilet, shower and sink. Each stateroom also has windows or large portholes, daily housekeeping, carpeted floors and a 32-inch monitor connected to the onboard entertainment system.

Dining

Meals are served in the air-conditioned dining salon with large windows and Fijian teak tables. Dining is relaxed and buffet-style, with hot breakfasts, lunches, snacks throughout the day, hearty dinners and desserts.

Breakfast typically includes a hot option alongside toast, cereals, fruit and juices. All meals, snacks and beverages are included, including beer, wine and spirits. Dietary requests should be arranged well in advance so the crew can prepare as much as possible before departure.

Diving & itineraries

Diving onboard and itineraries

Truk Odyssey operates an open dive schedule, with up to five dives a day offered during each full diving day. A typical day starts with breakfast around 06:30 - 07:00, followed by a first briefing around 07:45, two dives before lunch, another dive after lunch, a late afternoon dive and the option of a night dive after dinner. The exact schedule varies by site, conditions and guest preferences.

Most diving is done directly from the liveaboard’s dive deck while Odyssey is moored above or close to the dive site. Divers set up once at their own private station and tanks are filled at the seat. The dive platform has space for two divers plus a divemaster, with a ladder, lift, freshwater shower, warm towels, gear rinse tanks, camera rinse tanks and a large three-tiered camera table. Local guides are available, although suitably experienced buddy teams may also dive independently after briefings. Complimentary 30% nitrox is available for certified nitrox divers, and courses such as Advanced Open Water, Wreck Diver, Deep Diver and Nitrox may be available onboard. Technical divers can rent doubles, pony bottles, O2 mixes at additional cost, a fixed decompression bar and rebreather cylinders.

Truk Odyssey focuses exclusively on Chuuk Lagoon, with itineraries planned around the area’s wrecks, reef conditions, diver experience and guest requests. Commonly visited sites include Fujikawa Maru, Shinkoku Maru, Heian Maru, Nippo Maru, San Francisco Maru, Hoki Maru, Sankisan Maru, Yamagiri Maru, Kensho Maru, Unkai Maru, Betty Bomber and I-169 Submarine. Highlights range from Zero aircraft parts, tanks, artillery, torpedoes and trucks to coral-covered masts, engine rooms, gorgonians, anemones and schooling reef fish. Many wrecks can be explored within recreational limits, while deeper sites such as San Francisco Maru and Aikoku Maru are better suited to technical divers.

Diving in Chuuk and Micronesia

Micronesia is one of the Pacific’s most distinctive dive regions, offering a mix of WWII wrecks, remote reefs, shark encounters, manta rays, steep walls and clear tropical water. Chuuk Lagoon is its most famous wreck-diving destination, known for the world’s highest concentration of WWII shipwrecks within a single atoll. Many wrecks are now covered in hard and soft corals, creating a rare combination of military history and living reef.

Diving in Chuuk Lagoon is possible year-round, with warm water, generally sheltered conditions and wrecks ranging from shallow recreational dives to deeper technical profiles. The lagoon is best suited to confident divers, particularly those with advanced, wreck, deep or nitrox training. Truk Odyssey fits the destination especially well by allowing divers to live directly among the wreck sites, reduce daily transfers, and make repeated dives on key ships over a full week.

Planning

Getting there

Truk Odyssey departs from Weno, Chuuk. The nearest airport is Chuuk International Airport, also known as Truk Airport, on Weno Island. Most international travellers arrive via Guam, with onward flights to Chuuk.

Guests arriving and departing on the scheduled charter dates are met at the airport by an Odyssey crew member, and transfers between the airport and vessel are included at the beginning and end of the trip. Normal itineraries run for seven nights, Saturday to Saturday. Boarding begins at 17:00 on Saturday and continues through the night for any later arriving flights.

Guests arriving early or departing later may need to arrange additional accommodation and transfers. Flight schedules to Chuuk can be limited and may involve long connections, so it is worth allowing extra time when planning international routes, especially when connecting through Guam.

Other activities

Truk Odyssey is primarily a diving liveaboard, so non-diving activities are limited. Between dives, guests can relax on the sundeck, use the shaded outdoor seating, watch movies in the entertainment lounge, read from the onboard library, browse fish identification books, review photos and videos, or visit the onboard boutique.

Non-divers can join the trip, and a non-diver discount may be available when travelling with a diver. However, this is best suited to guests who are comfortable with a week focused exclusively on diving in a remote destination.
