Diving from Sun Siyam Vilu Reef
Sun Siyam Vilu Reef’s SSI Diamond Instructor Training Centre - Sun Diving School - boasts a team of multilingual instructors that offer SSI courses from beginner to instructor. They also teach specialties including nitrox, photography, videography, and turtle and shark courses, as well as the SSI Freediving Level One course. For fun divers, there’s a daily two-tank trip in the morning, followed by a single-tank trip in the afternoon. Plus, those with experience can explore the lagoon and house reef independently. Boat dives take place from a traditional dhoni fitted with toilets, a large sun deck and on board refreshments. Guests can also rent full equipment, and, to top it all off, nitrox is complimentary.
Dive sites range from reefs and channels, to thilas - all with the chance of encountering reef sharks, eagle rays, turtles, and even manta rays and whale sharks in the right season. And, with its wide channels and shallow drop-offs, beginners will find this atoll a great place to learn. Favourite spots include Bodu Thila, Lohi Caves, Yuki Reef, Velavaru Thila, Ewes Thila, Kermitt Corner, Anemone City, and the seasonal sites of Manta Point and Shark Point.
- Hop on a dive trip to Faafu Atoll between December and May, where the outer reef offers the chance to meet whale sharks.
- The dive centre organises full day trips to Manta Point in Faafu where seasonal manta rays can be spotted.
- You have good chances of finding various species of mating octopus on the outer reefs during April and May.
- Visit nearby Lohi Island and meet the farmers who produce the restaurants’ seasonal fruit and vegetables. You’ll also get to enjoy a freshly-made organic lunch at the farm.
To support the local sea turtle population’s future, new hatchlings are cared for at the resort through its rearing programme, where staff protect their nests and release the babies back into the sea. However, some require extra care and are reared in the resort’s specialised pools for up to 18 months. While in the care of the resort team, the turtles are monitored, kept clean, weighed and measured on a weekly basis. And, to improve the local turtle population’s chances of survival, the resort’s Corporate Social Responsibility Department partnered with students at the nearby school to host an educational programme raising awareness of their conservation.
