Vessel information
Originally built in 1964 for the Norwegian Government, Sjøveien has undertaken a variety of roles in its past, including for the Norwegian coast guard. In 2017, the vessel underwent an extensive refurbishment in preparation for its current position as an expedition cruise ship in the Svalbard Archipelago. The Sjøveien now retains its original charm, and features sophisticated wooden interiors and vintage elements. Additionally, the vessel is certified with an ice class of 1C, meaning it is strengthened for exploration in the far north and can deal with ice up to 40-cm thick.
At 41-metres long, this vessel departs with just 12-guests on board, leaving plenty of space for everyone to relax in. Passengers are accommodated in eight cabins spread over three decks, offering a choice of twin or double bed sleeping configurations, with ensuite bathrooms and either pothole or full windows. With such a small party on board, a trip with Sjøveien is like travelling on your own private yacht. And, the crew are every bit as enthusiastic about exploring this remote Arctic region as the guests, creating a palpable feeling of anticipation and adventure on board – much like the original expeditions in the region.
Onboard Sjøveien
Sjøveien’s dining area is located on the main deck and features a long banquet-style table which facilitates sociable meal times. Dining aboard the vessel is a full-board affair with breakfast, lunch, and dinner served here each day, along with teas, coffees, and other refreshing beverages. The lounge area shares the same space as the dining room, offering comfortable cushioned sofas and an aesthetic that combines Scandinavian and nautical themes. On the top deck, guests will also find an inviting open-air wood-fired hot tub for warming up and relaxing after a day of exciting activities.
Activities and excursions from Sjøveien
This vessel features plenty of deck space from which to enjoy the unique surroundings, while an open-bridge policy means guests are welcome to have a coffee and a chat with the captain from one of the best possible vantage points. To facilitate a range of daily excursions, Sjøveien is fitted with two onboard zodiacs and a convenient crane for loading them into the water. Throughout each voyage, guides will offer interesting talks and presentations in the lounge, providing extra insight and context into the wildlife, history, and geology of the region.
