Diving at Reethi Faru Resort
Reethi Faru Resort's partner dive centre, Sea Explorer, offers guided dives at over 40 sites, PADI and SSI courses, and speciality experiences, including DVP underwater scooter tours and snorkelling trips - with options to suit guests of all stripes. Their patient and professional crew has decades of experience in the Raa Atoll, helping visitors explore the very best diving areas, including the region’s stunning thilas and kandus, famous for pelagic encounters. Sea Explorer also offers guided tours to Hanifaru Bay, where reef mantas school, sometimes by the hundred, delighting snorkellers with their acrobatic underwater performances.
Many of the sites around the Reethi Faru Resort are excellent for learning, with easy entrance and calm currents. But, challenging and dynamic diving is easy to find, as well! If you're up for a bit of a challenge, head to the atoll’s southern sites, famous for fast-moving water and plenty of big fish action. No matter what kind of trip you're planning, you'll feel perfectly looked after thanks to this resort’s expert international team of guides, top-notch equipment and boats, and superb facilities for scuba students.
- While manta rays are here year-round, the atoll’s peak manta season is between October and November.
- If you’ve never tried scuba diving, don’t miss out on this resort’s free trial experience, held daily on the house reef!
- Sip a smoothie or cocktail at the sunset bar for one of the island’s most romantic views.
Reethi Faru has built several artificial reefs around the resort, in an effort to salvage the shallow water gardens that have been damaged by past bleaching events and typhoons. Known as the “Reethi Garden”, this ongoing effort uses transplanted pieces of broken or damaged coral installed on PVC frames to grow new colonies. These are later transplanted to the resort’s house reef.
Reethi Faru Resort also works in collaboration with Manta Trust, contributing to the Raa Atoll’s Manta ID Project. Each manta has unique spots and markings on its underside, which can be used to identify an individual. Visitor photos are shared with researchers, who then provide information on previously identified individuals, including sex, migratory patterns, and noted behaviour. And, in some cases, new manta rays are even identified!
The resort also contributes to a local turtle identification effort in collaboration with Olive Ridley Project. Turtles are identified by their shell plate patterns, which are unique to each individual. Visitor photographs can be submitted to help build a local database, allowing the Olive Ridley Project team to track known resident turtles and identify new individuals.
