Conservation
Conservation
Sustainability, conservation and local development are at the heart of Banyan Tree’s ethos, and the resort has won various awards for its efforts. Through its efforts and initiatives, this award-winning resort group is paving the way for eco-tourism on both a local and global scale. The resort and its passionate staff implement reduction, refusing, recycling, reusing and removal of waste. Rainwater harvesting plants on the property, and refusing single use plastics are just two of their multiple environmentally-conscious initiatives.
The resort also engages in mangrove and seagrass conservation, and organises tree-planting events across the Maldives with a target of 2,000 trees per year. Also, they support the Maldivian community through job creation, education, artisanal cooperatives, community impact initiatives, humanitarian relief and connecting travellers to local culture and heritage.
The resort also aims to maintain the island’s pristine condition, conducting four island clean-ups per year and raising awareness about effective waste management to engage locals, councils and schools. There’s also an interactive marine lab, where guests can learn about green sea turtles, sharks, and coral conservation, and get involved in coral planting, reef cleaning and turtle care. With its efforts, the staff and marine biologists highlight the challenges that the Maldives’ underwater world faces, and pioneer marine conservation and research.
