Over the past years, Big Blue Khao Lak has built an exceptional reputation for running first-class dive trips in the world-renowned Andaman Sea. Dive leaders are conscientious and strategically organise dives to maximise everyone’s enjoyment and safety, putting extra care into catering to the specific requirements of photographers or divers of varying experience levels.
The dive centre’s custom-designed and well-appointed speedboat, Blue Dolphin, offers exciting day trips and can access the best local sites in an hour or less – including Jacques Cousteau’s favourite, Richelieu Rock. Big Blue’s two Khao Lak offices are open from October to April each year, closing during the monsoon when heavy rains and rough seas make diving in the Andaman Sea more difficult.

Possibilities include the casual and sociable Walkers Inn, the quiet Happy Lagoon Bungalows with its fantastic swimming pool, waterslide, and Jacuzzi jets, or Khao Lak Youth Club which offers a more secluded and intimate atmosphere. Jerung guesthouse is conveniently located directly in front of the Big Blue dive centre, or for a little extra luxury and comfort, guests can choose to stay at larger resorts such as The Haven, The Marriott, or Ocean Breeze Resort.
While diving is one of the biggest draws to Khao Lak, the area offers a rich and diverse culture with beautiful natural surroundings, providing plenty to do during surface intervals. There are several stunning beaches around Khao Lak, including Pak Weep Beach and White Sands Beach – both offering picturesque settings and an array of wonderful restaurants. There are also many secluded waterfalls nearby, such as Tong Chong Fa, which are perfect spots for escaping the hustle and bustle and cooling off in the refreshing water. Tours to nearby national parks can also be found, which include jungle trekking, river rafting, and other outdoor pursuits. Traditional Thai massages and authentic home cooking classes are also popular pastimes which can be found in abundance in Khao Lak. Guests can also visit the International Tsunami Museum which honours the victims of the 2004 disaster.
Big Blue Khao Lak’s dive centre is well-equipment for a day of exploring the best dive sites Thailand has to offer, incorporating personal lockers, classrooms, a storage room, showers, toilets, WiFi, a shop selling dive gear. ScubaPro equipment is available to rent and is expertly maintained and replaced regularly. Dive computers and underwater cameras can also be rented and Nitrox is available at an additional cost. Big Blue Khao Lak’s day trips depart at 9am from their private pier which is located further north than all other day-trip operators, allowing for quick and easy access to Richelieu Rock, as well as Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, and the Surin Islands.
Blue Dolphin is a 14-meter custom-designed speed boat which can accommodate up to 17 guests in total comfort. The vessel can access many of Thailand’s best dive sites in less than 1 hour, and features a customised dive platform, camera rinse tank, and a delicious home-cooked Thai-style buffet lunch. A range of SSI and PADI courses is offered, from beginner through to Rescue Diver, and including various specialities. Boasting PADI, SSI, BSAC, and TDI/SDI affiliations, Big Blue Khao Lak’s dive team is diverse in their experience and expertise – easily catering to each guest’s individual comfort, goals, and age. Options for kids and one-day Discover Scuba Diving programs are also available.
Big Blue Khao Lak is committed to reducing its own ecological footprint and encourages guests to follow suit. It’s day-trip vessel, Blue Dolphin, runs on E85 ethanol based fuel – releasing 80% less carbon emissions and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 34%. On-board, guests are also provided with stainless steel water bottles and a refill station, saving the use of up to 2000 plastic bottles every season. Locally sourced biodegradable bin bags are also used on the boats and within the office.
